Assigned Essay Prompt

If for some reason you cannot find a scholarship that requires an essay, you will be required to answer this prompt:

What do you consider to be the single most important societal problem? Why?

Your essay should be at least 500 words and answer the question thoroughly, addressing all of the guidelines that we have discussed in class.

For Class, Friday 2/22

Please be sure to bring the prompt/question for your scholarship essay with you to our class meeting on Friday. We will begin working on drafting our essays. We will discuss what you should and shouldn't include in your writing.

Here is the link to the sample essay that we will go over.

What Happened in Class on 2/14

Please make sure you post your Vocab 2 story, ASAP if you haven't already!

If you were absent during class on 2/14, this is what you missed

The class completed a review quiz on Socrative.com. This quiz helped some students realize which words they needed to study more. If you missed this quiz, just continue to study the vocab words.

We discussed our next assignment/unit that we will be working on. There are two options: Scholarships and scholarship essays or a job resume and cover letter. The focus of this unit (besides helping you with your future plans) is to learn how to write for our audience, and knowing our purpose for writing. Below is a link to the handout, outlining your assignment. More information regarding due dates, specific requirements, etc., is to come.

In addition to explaining the new assignments, Mrs. Owens and I passed out about 20 local scholarships to the students present in class. You will be responsible for going through these, if you missed. It is important that you do. Some students had up to ten scholarships that they were eligible for!!!!!

If you were absent try to come a bit early next class, Wednesday, February 20 to go through these scholarships and to ask any questions that you may have.

It's that time again...VOCABULARY! Assignments 2/12

Assignments 2/12

Vocab 2

I will be having writing conferences with each student individually. Writing conferences will last between 3-5 minutes.

While conferences are going on, students will work on and complete the vocabulary lesson for Vocab 2.

Vocabulary Assignment:

  1. Complete the vocabulary handout with a partner or small group of 3-4 people. The handout must be turned in for participation points. All answers must be correct.
  2. At the beginning of class, I will assign each student a word. You will be completing one vocabulary slide for the class powerpoint. (Like we did for Vocab 1) Be a good citizen of the classroom and help your fellow peer if somebody forgets how to complete the slide. Humor is encouraged when applicable.
  • Information to include on your slide:
  • Your Name
  • Vocab Word
  • Definition
  • Your own sentence
  • An image that represents the meaning of your vocab word.
  1. Make a blog post that shows your mastered comprehension of the vocabulary words:
  • Choose 10 vocabulary words to use in your blog post. The post may be a short fictional story, a recount of something that really happened, a poem, a rap, anything. Be creative. However, your post should demonstrate that you understand what the definition of the word means and that you are able to use it in a sentence. Do not just write random sentences, they should be cohesive unit. Please highlight or underline/bold the vocabulary words in your post.
You may use flex time, however you should be able to complete all of these assignments before the end of class. Remember, if your grade is below a 75 or you have a missing assignment you must remain in the classroom to complete your assignments.

Double Remember-- Even though you are absent, you are responsible for turning work in on time. If you miss class, yet come in to school that day, I expect your paper to be in. If you are sick, please contact me and make other arrangements. If you know you will miss class the day an assignment is due, you should turn your assignments in early, before you leave.

Points will be taken off for late work.

If your absence is unexcused, you may not make up the work. (GLHS policy)
